Migration Methodology

Four phases, structured for outcomes.

Aligned with AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP). Each phase has clear deliverables, defined acceptance criteria, and a go/no-go decision before the next phase begins. No big-bang migrations.

PHASE 01 · ASSESS

Discovery & readiness

Application discovery using AWS Application Discovery Service or manual interview process. Workload categorization (rehost, replatform, refactor, retire). Total Cost of Ownership analysis. Migration readiness scoring. Architectural target state defined. AWS MAP funding eligibility check.

ADSTCO ToolMigration HubWell-Architected
PHASE 02 · MOBILIZE

Foundation & landing zone

AWS landing zone deployed (Control Tower or custom). Account structure, networking, security baseline, IAM, encryption, logging. Migration tools provisioned (MGN for servers, DMS for databases). CI/CD pipelines for migrated workloads. Compliance evidence baseline established.

PHASE 03 · MIGRATE

Workload migration waves

Workloads migrated in waves of related applications. AWS MGN for server replication. AWS DMS for databases. Application-level changes for replatform candidates. Pre-cutover testing in staging. Cutover playbooks documented. Rollback procedures defined and rehearsed.

PHASE 04 · MODERNIZE

Post-migration optimization

Workloads moved to AWS-native services where appropriate. Containerization, serverless adoption, managed database migration. Cost optimization (Reserved Instances, Savings Plans). Operational handover to internal team or transition to ongoing CloudOps. Lessons-learned documented.

SOURCE PLATFORMS

From any source

Migrations from on-premise (VMware, Hyper-V, physical), Heroku (Postgres + dynos to ECS/RDS), DigitalOcean (Droplets to EC2/ECS), other clouds (Azure, GCP), or hybrid environments. Source-specific playbooks for each, refined across multiple engagements. Heroku and DigitalOcean each deserve their own dedicated deep-dive pages: Heroku to ECS and DigitalOcean to AWS.

AWS MAP FUNDING

Co-investment eligibility

AWS Migration Acceleration Program may co-fund qualifying migrations. As an AWS Advanced Tier Partner, we can structure engagements to be MAP-eligible where applicable. Funding levels depend on workload size and type and are subject to AWS eligibility and approval. We assess what qualifies during discovery.

How We Engage

Three migration commitment shapes.

Different migration scopes need different engagement models. Quick wins for single-workload moves. Full programs for multi-workload migrations. Hybrid where part stays on-source while part migrates.

Who It's For

Who AWS migration is right for.

Migrations are high-stakes work. The wrong partner can leave you with infrastructure you can't operate. We're honest about who we're a fit for and who's better served elsewhere.

Strong fit

If you are…

  • A HealthTech, EdTech, regulated SaaS, or FinTech migrating to AWS for compliance, performance, or cost reasons
  • Early-stage through growth-stage with one to ten workloads to migrate over the next 6-18 months
  • Subject to compliance frameworks (DORA, NIS2, APRA, GDPR, HIPAA) that affect migration approach
  • Looking for AWS MAP co-funding eligibility on a qualifying workload
  • Tired of partners who quote a migration, deliver chaos, and disappear at cutover
  • Wanting founder-led discovery and architecture, not template-driven assessment
Not a fit

If you are…

  • A 10,000-server enterprise migration requiring multiple AWS partners coordinated by Big Four
  • Looking for cheapest-possible lift-and-shift with no architectural improvement
  • Migrating away from AWS (we work AWS-only and won't help you leave)
  • Pre-product startup where your "migration" is just initial AWS setup (different service entirely)
  • Not committed to ISO 27001-aligned migration practices (we can't dilute our quality model)
Engagement Options

Three engagement shapes, one approach.

Every migration starts with a free scoping call. Engagement shape depends on workload count, source complexity, and target architecture. AWS may co-fund qualifying migrations through the Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) — funding is subject to AWS eligibility and approval. We assess what qualifies in your first call.

Single workload

Defined migration

Per workload · scope-dependent
  • Discovery & target architecture
  • Migration execution
  • Cutover playbook & rehearsal
  • Founder review at each phase
  • 30 days post-cutover support
Migration program

Multi-workload

6-18 month program · wave-based
  • Wave-based migration approach
  • Landing zone & foundation
  • Quarterly founder steering
  • AWS MAP funding application
  • Transition to CloudOps
Hybrid migration

Phased + bridge

12-24 month horizon · phased
  • Hybrid architecture design
  • Bridge connectivity setup
  • Phased migration as constraints lift
  • Founder steering throughout
  • Risk-aware sequencing

All migrations include an AWS MAP funding eligibility assessment. Where you qualify, AWS may co-fund part of the program — funding is subject to AWS eligibility and approval. Pricing in USD or AUD on request.

AWS MAP Funding

Your migration may be partially funded by AWS.

The AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) lets AWS co-fund qualifying migrations delivered through eligible partners. As a MAP-eligible AWS Advanced Tier Services Partner, HAZERCLOUD scopes your workload, registers the opportunity with AWS, and applies available funding directly against your migration cost. Funding is subject to AWS eligibility and approval — we tell you what qualifies in the first call, before you commit to anything.

Assess

Scope & check

We scope your workloads and check MAP eligibility as part of discovery — at no cost, before you commit.

Register

Handle the paperwork

We handle AWS opportunity registration and the MAP paperwork on your behalf, so you do not have to navigate the program yourself.

Offset

Reduce your invoice

Where AWS approves funding, it is applied directly against your migration cost — reducing what you pay.

How much does this cost?+
Every engagement starts with a free 30-minute scoping call, and we share full pricing before any commitment — no gated discovery. Costs depend on scope; the call gives you a real number, not a range from a website.
Do I need to be technical to work with you?+
No. Many of our clients are founders without a technical background. We explain decisions in plain language, your dedicated engineer is reachable directly, and Jobin (our founder) is on every call. You'll always know what we're doing and why — in words, not acronyms.
How long does an AWS migration typically take?+
Single workload: 6-14 weeks. Migration program: 6-18 months. Hybrid: 12-24 months. The variation depends on workload complexity, regulatory constraints, and source platform. Discovery phase always finishes with a specific timeline before commitment to migrate.
Can AWS fund part of my migration?+
Often, yes. Through the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP), AWS co-funds qualifying migrations delivered by eligible partners like HAZERCLOUD. Eligibility depends on workload size and type — we assess it in your first call and handle the AWS registration if you qualify.
Can you migrate us off Heroku to AWS specifically?+
Yes — this is a frequent migration. Heroku to AWS deserves its own page given the specifics. See our Heroku-to-ECS deep-dive page for source-specific architecture, cost analysis, and case studies.
What if our migration uncovers technical debt we didn't know about?+
Common, and expected. Discovery surfaces hidden dependencies, undocumented integrations, and database schema issues regularly. We document findings and present remediation options before migrating. Some debt gets fixed pre-migration; some gets logged for post-migration. Honest assessment is a feature, not a bug.
How do you handle compliance during migration?+
For DORA, NIS2, APRA, GDPR, HIPAA, ISO 27001 — compliance affects migration approach (data residency, encryption, audit trails, region selection). We design with the framework in mind from discovery. Audit evidence is captured throughout. The migrated environment is audit-ready, not a future remediation project.
What happens at cutover if something goes wrong?+
Every cutover has a documented rollback procedure tested in staging. Cutover happens during a defined maintenance window with founder availability. If the rollback criteria are hit, we revert to source and reassess. Migration cutovers are not "no-going-back" events — they're carefully sequenced with explicit decision gates.
Do you operate the environment after migration?+
Optional. Many clients hand over to their internal team after a 30-60 day stabilization period. Others transition into our CloudOps service for ongoing operations. We document everything either way. The migrated environment is yours to operate or hand to us.
