Data residency is usually the first question an Australian board asks. Both regions keep your data in-country. Which one is right depends on your workload, not on habit.
The oldest and deepest AWS region in Australia, live since 2012. Almost every AWS service is available here, usually on or near global launch, and three Availability Zones make Multi-AZ the norm. For most Australian workloads this is where your primary environment belongs.
Opened in 2023, Melbourne is a strong disaster-recovery region and a fit for Victorian workloads that want in-state residency. We commonly pair it with Sydney for cross-region failover rather than treating it as a standalone primary.
We use service control policies to block resource creation outside your approved regions, encrypt at rest and in transit, and keep logging that shows where data actually lives.
